How filmmakers can use Video Pencil and CueCam to provide feedback
YouTube - Watch this post's supporting video.
Video Pencil is a great tool for reviewing film footage.
You can load up video files, shuttle through naturally, zoom in on something, circle something, draw arrows, scribble on bigger explosions, anything you need.
Using Video Pencil in team reviews
You can use it in a room - all you need is an Apple TV and an iPad and everybody can see what you’re talking about. Just fire up Video Pencil and use Screen Mirroring to put the annotated video feed on the TV.
Using Video Pencil on the go
If you’re not in the room, Video Pencil lets you record your feedback. So you could be sitting in a taxi while still moving things forward.
You’ll want to enable the mic, and record everything. You can appear picture-in-picture by using the picker at the top-right.
If you are in traffic, you should probably turn on Voice Isolation via your iPad’s Control Center menu.
This makes it easier to work with editors, colourists, or collaborators across time zones.
Creating More Structured Reviews with CueCam on your Mac
If you want to go beyond ad-hoc feedback, you can use CueCam to bring a bit more structure.
You’ll still be able to use Video Pencil on your iPad to draw, zoom and shuttle through footage, but you’ll manage everything on your Mac. This saves time-consuming (and storage-consuming) file transfers from Mac to Cloud to iPad and back.
Live Camera & Recording
CueCam’s live camera lets you work in a similar way to Video Pencil. Drag in a video file and it will appear on your iPad screen, ready to annotate.
You can shuttle through the footage from your Mac, or you can use the iPad’s Shuttle Wheel to scan through the footage.
You can record on your Mac, using any connected camera and microphone.
Use headphones to monitor the audio, which will also be included in the recording, unlike in Video Pencil on the iPad (at time of writing!).
Here’s how it looks using CueCam’s Virtual Green screen to keep you picture-in-picture. Video Pencil connects automatically.
Here’s what it looks like on the iPad. You can see the same footage and you can draw, zoom and shuttle through the video.
Collecting multiple shots with CueCam
If you have a few shots to review but you don’t want to record multiple videos, you can create a script.
If you have a batch of video files, use the Add Media... option to import each video to its own card.
You can trim clips to focus on just the things you want to talk about, and make notes on the cue cards.
Use the Split button to break clips across multiple cards to keep your thoughts better-organised. You can change the playback speed per-card, mute your microphone or hide your picture-in-picture overlay, depending on what you want to communicate with each card.
Recording with CueCam
You could just press Record in the toolbar, but if you want the best possible results, you should set up your teleprompter so that you’ll be making eye contact with the camera while being able to see your notes.
You can use a big camera and something like an Elgato Prompter, or you can just use your iPhone.
CueCam works with Shoot Pro Webcam to transform your iPhone into an all-in-one camera, screen and teleprompter. All you need to do is launch it near your Mac and select it as your camera in CueCam.
On your iPhone screen you’ll see the teleprompter (next to the device’s camera) and the feed from CueCam.
Using a CueCam script lets you collect your thoughts ahead and then bang through your feedback effectively and efficiently.
