How-To Guides
Every guide on one page →Common questions
▶ I just want to draw on my video in Zoom or Teams. What do I need?
Video Pencil on your iPad and CueCam Presenter on your Mac. CueCam is free to use as a virtual camera that works with Video Pencil automatically. In Zoom or Teams, pick CueCam as your camera.
Watch the Beginners' guide to drawing on your webcam.
▶ How do I use CueCam in a call?
Choose CueCam as your camera in the call app. To show slides at a higher resolution than a camera feed allows, share CueCam's Program Window instead. Open it from the Window menu, or press ⌥⌘P. Some apps also let you share a camera source as a screen share, which works too.
▶ My shared screen looks blurry in the call.
CueCam sends a 1080p feed. Most call apps don't keep 1080p for camera feeds, and Zoom accounts are limited to 720p unless you ask Zoom to enable 1080p. To make text sharper, zoom in on the part of the screen you're talking about, or share a single window instead of the whole display.
▶ I see a black screen instead of my camera.
- Is CueCam running? If you've picked CueCam as your camera in another app, CueCam needs to be open on your Mac.
- Is your camera switched on in CueCam? Check the camera button in CueCam's main window.
- Using the old Shoot USB camera? It no longer works on newer versions of macOS. Connect Shoot to CueCam instead, then pick CueCam as your camera.
▶ Where do my recordings go?
To your Movies folder, unless you choose another one. To change it, open CueCam → Settings (⌘,), and under Recordings, click Change…. This needs the latest version of CueCam.
▶ I already bought Video Pencil, Shoot or Beat Sheet. Is there a discount on CueCam?
Yes, what you paid is discounted from your first CueCam payment.
- Video Pencil or Shoot: sign in to CueCam Presenter, then open Video Pencil or Shoot on your iPad or iPhone. Your purchases sync to your account and the discount appears when you go to buy.
- Beat Sheet: the discount appears automatically when you buy, as long as you used the same email address for both.
See Access discounts for Shoot, Video Pencil and Beat Sheet users if your discount doesn't show up.
Which app do I need?
▶ What does each app do?
- CueCam Presenter (Mac): your camera, slides, screen shares and videos in one feed. Use it as a virtual camera in Zoom, Teams or Meet, record it, or stream it.
- Video Pencil (iPad): draw over anything with Apple Pencil, live.
- Shoot (iPhone): use your iPhone as a high-quality camera.
They work on their own, but they're built to work together. CueCam is the hub on your Mac. Video Pencil and Shoot connect to it.

▶ I use Ecamm Live (or OBS). Do I need CueCam?
No, but it's usually the easiest way. You have two options:
- With CueCam: CueCam publishes Video Pencil's drawing as a Syphon feed that Ecamm can use. See How to use Ecamm Live with CueCam Presenter.
- Without CueCam: connect Video Pencil to Ecamm over NDI. See How to draw on Ecamm Live with Video Pencil.
▶ Does CueCam replace Beat Sheet and Video Pencil Camera?
Yes. CueCam Presenter grew out of Beat Sheet, Video Pencil Camera and Shoot's Mac tools, and it's where all new work happens.
Video Pencil Camera is no longer supported. To use Video Pencil on your Mac, use CueCam Presenter instead.
▶ I have a CueCam subscription. Does that unlock Video Pencil and Shoot?
Yes, while they're connected to CueCam. With a CueCam subscription, Video Pencil and Shoot have no watermark whenever they're connected to CueCam on your Mac. To use them without the watermark on their own, for example with Ecamm or OBS, buy the app's own upgrade.

See Access discounts for Shoot, Video Pencil and Beat Sheet users if your discount doesn't show up.
▶ Can I use CueCam on two Macs?
Yes. Sign in to CueCam with the same Apple Account on each Mac. Signing in happens in your browser, so it doesn't matter which Apple Account the Mac itself uses.
Quit CueCam on the Mac you're not using, so Video Pencil and Shoot connect to the right one.
Connecting the iPad and iPhone
▶ Should I connect over USB or Wi-Fi?
USB is more reliable if you have a cable. CueCam prefers a wired connection when one is available. Video Pencil shows which kind of connection it's using. If it says Wi-Fi while plugged in, unplug and plug it back in, or carry on: if you don't notice any lag, nothing is wrong.
▶ My drawings lag or the connection drops.
- If you can, use a USB cable.
- On Wi-Fi, lag usually comes from an unstable network, not lack of bandwidth. Busy or restricted networks (offices, schools, churches) cause most of it.
- On NDI, you can lower the resolution on the NDI side.
- To run NDI over USB, see the Internet Sharing trick.
Using CueCam in Zoom, Teams and Meet
▶ My shared app sits off-centre and I have to re-zoom every time.
Save the zoom. Hover over the share, open the menu next to Reset Zoom and choose Save for…. CueCam will frame that screen the same way next time. Sharing a window instead of the whole display also helps, because CueCam matches windows by title.
▶ Can I record or stream a conversation with a remote guest?
Yes, though it's an advanced set-up. Today:
- In CueCam, share the Zoom or Teams window and leave it shared, so your guest appears in your recording or stream.
- In the call app, choose your own microphone, not CueCam's, so your guest doesn't hear themselves back.
- Set the call app's speaker output to your headphones or speakers, not to CueCam.
CueCam 4 will make this simpler: it can record the call window directly, and CueCam's microphone will automatically leave out your guest's own voice. That means you can pick CueCam as your microphone in the call, and your guest hears your videos and screen shares too.
Recording
▶ Where do my recordings go?
To your Movies folder, unless you choose another one. To change it, open CueCam → Settings (⌘,), and under Recordings, click Change…. This needs the latest version of CueCam.
▶ Can I record in 4K?
Not reliably at the moment. This is a known issue, and CueCam 4 will address it. Until then, you can record CueCam at 4K with QuickTime Player by choosing CueCam as the camera there.
4K is mainly worth it for high-definition screencasts. Video calls don't use it.
▶ Can I record my camera, slides and drawing separately?
Yes. In the Record menu, choose which layers you want. Each layer is saved as its own file, ready for editing.
The layer files don't include sound yet. Use the sound from the main recording when you edit.
▶ My recording has no sound.
Check the right mic is selected in CueCam and its meter moves when you speak. If the meter moves but a recording still comes out silent, please report it in Discord's #cuecam-issues channel.
Look and layout
▶ Can I change the picture-in-picture circle?
- Position: open the menu on CueCam's camera button and choose a corner under Face Cam Circle.
- Shape: it's a circle for now. To get a rectangle, turn on green screen with a colour that isn't in your camera picture.
- Turning it off: select several cards and switch picture-in-picture off for all of them in the sidebar.
Want a different shape? Email michael@squares.tv. It's a small change, and asking is the best way to make it happen.
▶ Can I save my own default fonts, colours and spacing?
Not yet. For now, set up a document how you like it and use Save As… to start new ones from it.
CueCam 4 will let you set your own styles for titles and body text, and for backgrounds, including textures and gradients.
▶ Can I put my own transparent graphics or lower thirds on screen?
Yes, in a few ways:
- A logo or graphic that stays up throughout: add a transparent PNG in the Doc settings. It shows across the whole document.
- An animated lower third or overlay: add a video with transparency (HEVC with alpha) to a card. CueCam plays it on top of everything instead of as a normal video.
- Behind you: change your camera's background.
Beta versions
▶ How do I try the CueCam beta?
Download it from cuecam-presenter.com/beta. It installs alongside the regular version. Report beta issues in Discord's #cuecam-beta-issues channel.
▶ An update broke something. Can I go back to an older version?
Please report it in Discord's #cuecam-issues channel instead, so it gets fixed for everyone. If you're stuck before an important session, email michael@squares.tv.
Getting help
▶ Where do I report a bug or suggest something?
In CueCam, choose Help → Report Bug. Or post in the issues and suggestions channels in the Squares TV Discord. Reports from the app are posted in Discord with your name on them.
▶ Is there a guide to get started?
Yes. The latest getting-started videos are in the Start Here playlist on the CueCam Presenter YouTube channel.
